Anwar Ibrahim Highlights Governance, Economic Collaboration, and Climate Commitment at WEF Dialogue

Davos, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed the Madani government’s commitment to good governance and democratic accountability, emphasizing their importance in Malaysia’s progress. Speaking during an exclusive dialogue titled “A Conversation with Anwar Ibrahim”, moderated by World Economic Forum (WEF) Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Klaus Schwab, Anwar outlined his leadership priorities and Malaysia’s strategic focus.

“Countries are destroyed because of arrogance and corruption. That is why my first task in Malaysia is to address the issue of governance,” said Anwar. Highlighting challenges inherited from past administrations, including systemic corruption and scandals, he stressed the need for transparent tender processes and an empowered anti-corruption commission with robust legislation.

Anwar also emphasized humility as an essential quality of leadership. “The way we are given praise can make us forget that leadership is a learning curve. Leaders must have the humility to acknowledge their limitations,” he said.

Economic Collaboration within ASEAN

On ASEAN’s priorities, Anwar highlighted the bloc’s focus on economic fundamentals and trade enhancement. Sharing insights from his exchanges with regional leaders, he stated, “Our main interest is economic collaboration—digitalisation, AI, energy transition, investments, and trade remain the focus.”

When asked about modeling ASEAN after the European Union with a common currency and internal market, Anwar noted that while the EU’s successes and limitations offer valuable lessons, ASEAN’s current focus lies in economic cooperation rather than political integration.

Commitment to Climate Action

Anwar assured Malaysia’s adherence to the Paris Agreement and global climate standards. “We must take firm measures to address climate change. Observing the Paris Agreement or any international standard is essential to save our country and society,” he said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the progress of the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, which aims to provide green electricity across the region, demonstrating ASEAN’s commitment to sustainable energy transitions.

Human Rights and Unity

Addressing human rights in ASEAN, Anwar referenced the bloc’s five-point consensus on Myanmar as an outcome of rigorous engagement. He also underscored Malaysia’s diversity as a source of strength.

“We must present Malaysia as a united, multiracial country. As a Muslim-majority nation with significant Indian, Chinese, and indigenous communities in Sabah and Sarawak, we embody the concept of one great family,” Anwar said.

The dialogue reaffirmed Malaysia’s strategic priorities under Anwar’s leadership: fostering good governance, championing economic collaboration within ASEAN, committing to climate action, and promoting unity and inclusivity on a global stage.
