Azerbaijan Secures Seat on UN Human Rights Committee for 2027–2030 Term

Baku, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijan has secured a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Committee for the 2027–2030 term, following elections held in New York on the sidelines of the 42nd Meeting of States Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), according to a statement issued by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A total of 16 countries, including Azerbaijan, competed for nine available seats on the committee, which is composed of independent experts responsible for monitoring the implementation of the ICCPR by its State parties.
Azerbaijan’s nominated candidate, Professor Fuad Zarbiyev, an expert in international law at the Geneva Institute of International Relations, was elected in the first round of voting. He secured the support of 131 participating states, ensuring his appointment to the Committee.
The Human Rights Committee serves as a key United Nations treaty body overseeing compliance with civil and political rights obligations under the ICCPR and is composed of independent specialists elected by member states.
The election marks Azerbaijan’s successful bid to contribute to the global human rights monitoring mechanism for the upcoming term.
