Belgium Reaffirms Backing for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan on Western Sahara

Belgium

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Belgium has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal for Western Sahara, describing it as the most serious and realistic basis for resolving the long-standing regional dispute.

The position was conveyed by Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, following talks in Rabat with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

Speaking after the meeting, Prévot described Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most credible foundation for a political solution that is fair, durable and acceptable to all parties. He underlined that Belgium’s stance aligns with the joint declaration signed in Brussels in October 2025.

The Belgian minister acknowledged the central importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco, characterising it as a matter linked to sovereignty and national unity. He emphasised that Belgium’s approach remains grounded in international law and is aimed at supporting a negotiated political settlement.

Concrete Diplomatic and Economic Engagement

Prévot stated that Belgium would translate its position into tangible diplomatic and economic measures. As part of this effort, Belgium plans to enhance its engagement in Morocco’s southern provinces.

The Belgian Ambassador to Rabat is expected to visit the region to meet with Belgian companies exploring investment and partnership opportunities. Discussions are also underway to organise regional economic forums in coordination with local institutions.

On the consular front, Belgium confirmed that its Consulate General in Rabat exercises jurisdiction over the entire territory of Morocco, including the southern provinces. Belgian nationals residing in or travelling to the Sahara region will continue to receive consular services without distinction.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The visit reflects the continued strengthening of bilateral ties between Belgium and Morocco. Both countries maintain regular political consultations and are seeking to expand cooperation across strategic sectors, including diplomacy, trade and investment.

Officials from both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening partnership and advancing regional stability through constructive dialogue and economic collaboration.
