Bandar Seri Begawan, The Gulf Observer: The 21st session of Brunei’s Legislative Council has officially adjourned, with Speaker Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib commending members for their dedication and the productive discussions held throughout the session.

In his closing address, the Speaker expressed gratitude to all individuals involved in ensuring the smooth operation of the meetings, particularly those working behind the scenes.

“Though many may be unseen, their efforts are invaluable in ensuring that our proceedings run formally and smoothly,” he stated.

The session saw the successful completion of 187 questions and robust debates on over 400 issues during the committee stage, with members contributing more than 57 hours of discussion.

The Speaker underscored the ongoing improvements in the legislative process, highlighting the shift from holding sessions once a year to twice a year as a significant step toward increasing efficiency and effectiveness. He also stressed the need to continuously update procedures and working processes in accordance with the Standing Orders.

Reflecting on the improvements in debate quality, the Speaker acknowledged members’ progress in articulating their views with clarity and composure. “Members have shown remarkable focus, and the discussions have become more structured and effective,” he said, emphasizing the role of constructive dialogue in national development.

Additionally, the Speaker urged members to provide thorough feedback on government policies to ensure positive outcomes for the nation’s welfare. “Debates should be based on facts, offering alternative viewpoints that can contribute to better policymaking,” he noted.

In his concluding remarks, the Speaker emphasized the importance of cooperation, innovation, and resilience as Brunei progresses towards its Vision 2035 goals. He encouraged members to embrace challenges and work collectively to address future uncertainties. “The world is evolving rapidly, and we must be prepared to face the challenges ahead,” he said.

The 21st Legislative Council session was formally adjourned, with plans to reconvene later this year to continue deliberations on key national issues, including the economy, education, healthcare, and security.
