Indonesia Condemns Israeli Actions, Calls for Greater Parliamentary Role at IPU Assembly in Istanbul

Jakarta, The Gulf: Indonesia’s House of Representatives Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation (BKSAP) has strongly condemned Israel’s actions in the Middle East, urging unified global pressure to prevent further escalation, during the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Istanbul, Türkiye.
In a statement issued on Sunday, BKSAP Chairman Syahrul Aidi Maazat criticized Israel’s military actions, including an attack on United Nations peacekeeping forces in Lebanon that resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel.
He described the attack as “out of line,” emphasizing that targeting peacekeepers violates international norms. The committee also strongly denounced Israel’s continued military operations in Palestine, particularly airstrikes in Gaza, as well as recent legislative measures concerning the death penalty for Palestinians.
“Israel has become a parasite on all of us. It is undermining the geopolitical and economic order, even undermining world peace. We urge all countries to unite and pressure Israel to prevent a third world war,” Maazat stated.
During a separate session on the role of parliaments within the United Nations framework, BKSAP Deputy Chair Muhammad Husein Fadlulloh underscored the importance of legislative institutions in enhancing the effectiveness of UN programs.
He stressed that the United Nations’ impact would remain limited without active parliamentary participation, noting that legislatures carry a direct mandate from the people and play a critical role in governance and accountability.
Fadlulloh called for reforms in the UN coordination model to expand engagement beyond executive branches to include parliaments, highlighting Türkiye’s disaster management practices as an example of effective integration between UN mechanisms and legislative frameworks.
He added that such collaboration could accelerate the development of emergency regulations and improve the efficiency of humanitarian responses. In this context, BKSAP encouraged the UN to further facilitate parliamentary involvement in strengthening disaster resilience worldwide.
The Indonesian delegation also reiterated its strong stance on humanitarian issues, particularly in Gaza, calling on the international community to support a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire.
“Indonesia will not stop urging the UN to support a resolution for a permanent and complete ceasefire in Gaza,” Fadlulloh said.
He reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to advancing UN reforms aimed at creating a more inclusive and democratic institution that recognizes the central role of national parliaments in maintaining global peace and prosperity.
The 152nd IPU General Assembly, held from April 15 to 19, 2026, focused on advancing the global peace agenda and brought together parliamentary delegations from across the world, including Indonesia, which also advocated for the protection and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
