Indonesia Strengthens Athlete Welfare with Bonuses and Long-Term Financial Planning Initiatives

Indonesia

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia is enhancing athlete welfare by awarding financial bonuses for international achievements and promoting long-term financial planning to secure athletes’ futures, Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said on Tuesday.

In a statement issued in Jakarta, Thohir highlighted that bonuses for medalists at major international events, including the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games, and the Olympic Games, reflect the government’s appreciation for the sacrifices made by athletes.

“Athletes give their all to win and elevate Indonesia’s name globally,” he said, adding that the state remains committed to supporting athletes throughout their lives in line with the vision of President Prabowo Subianto.

Thohir noted that the president has directed authorities to prioritize athlete welfare as part of building a sustainable, high-performance sports ecosystem. He emphasized that the government recognizes the dedication required to prepare for and compete at the international level.

He further stressed that the bonuses are not merely symbolic but represent tangible support both during and after athletes’ careers. “These bonuses are concrete proof of respect and aim to secure better futures for athletes,” he said.

The minister also encouraged athletes to allocate their bonuses toward long-term needs such as education, skills development, savings, and investment, in order to prevent a decline in living standards after retirement.

Several Indonesian athletes have already demonstrated effective use of such incentives. Weightlifter Eko Yuli Irawan invested in farmland for his parents and built a training facility, while karateka Leica Al Humaira Lubis purchased a home. Hockey player Revo Prilianto directed his bonus into gold investments and education, and para-powerlifter Ni Nengah Widiasih launched a culinary business that has created employment opportunities locally.

Thohir said these examples illustrate how athletes can utilize financial rewards wisely to build sustainable futures while inspiring others to do the same.
