Macron and Scholz Reaffirm Commitment to a Strong and United Europe

Paris, The Gulf Observer: French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the necessity of a “strong” and “resilient” Europe during a meeting at the Elysée Palace on January 22. The meeting coincided with the 62nd anniversary of the Elysée Treaty, a cornerstone of post-World War II French-German cooperation.
At a joint press briefing, Macron and Scholz highlighted the importance of their countries’ partnership in fostering European unity amid a rapidly changing global landscape.
“Europe must be strong and resilient in a world that is, to put it mildly, in motion,” Scholz stated. He also reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to being a “constructive and assertive partner” in its relationship with the United States, even as new dynamics emerge under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Scholz described Europe and the U.S. as having “a long history of friendship and partnership,” which he said forms “a stable foundation” for future collaboration. However, he acknowledged that Trump’s early policy announcements would require detailed analysis in concert with European partners.
Macron stressed that Europe’s only viable response to global challenges is “more unity, more ambition, more audacity, and more independence.” He called for increased investment in defense and the development of Europe’s industrial base to enhance the continent’s capabilities and autonomy.
“Our couple is solid,” Macron declared, referring to the enduring Franco-German alliance.
The meeting underscored both leaders’ determination to reinforce European unity and adapt to evolving international challenges. Scholz, facing a general election in Germany next month, affirmed that the Franco-German partnership would remain pivotal in shaping Europe’s future.
