Newly Discovered Orchid Species, Calanthe yingjiangensis, Unveiled in China

Calanthe yingjiangensis

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: In a recent plant resource survey within the Tongbiguan Provincial-level Nature Reserve in southwest China’s Yunnan Province, a remarkable discovery unfolded as researchers from the reserve and Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University identified a new orchid species. This groundbreaking finding has been documented in the prestigious journal Phytotaxa.

Through meticulous morphological and molecular systematic research comparisons, the team classified the newfound species as a member of the Calanthe genus within the Orchidaceae family, bestowing upon it the name Calanthe yingjiangensis. Notably, the discovery showcases the rich biodiversity harbored within the region.

Calanthe yingjiangensis shares similarities with Calanthe puberula; however, it distinguishes itself by featuring a midlobe of the lip adorned with an elliptic yellow spot near the base of the column and four distinctive purple veins.

As of now, this unique orchid species has exclusively been located in the understory at an altitude ranging from 1,600 to 1,800 meters above sea level in Yingjiang County, Yunnan. The specific ecological niche of Calanthe yingjiangensis adds to the significance of this discovery, highlighting the delicate balance of nature within the region.

The unveiling of Calanthe yingjiangensis underscores the importance of ongoing plant resource surveys and the collaborative efforts between nature reserves and academic institutions. This discovery not only contributes to our understanding of regional biodiversity but also emphasizes the need for conservation efforts to safeguard unique and rare species within China’s diverse ecosystems.
