Oman Calls for Political Solutions to Address Root Causes of Middle East Conflicts at UN Security Council

New York, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman has emphasized that achieving sustainable security and stability in the Middle East depends fundamentally on addressing the root causes of ongoing conflicts, according to a statement delivered before the United Nations Security Council.

In a speech at the Security Council open debate titled “Promoting Political Solutions in the Middle East: Mediation and Dialogue for Lasting Peace”, Oman stressed that political solutions remain the most reliable path toward consolidating peace and enabling long-term development and stability across the region.

Oman’s address was delivered by Khalid Saleh Al Rabkhi during the high-level session chaired by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

The Omani representative noted that regional experience has shown that unresolved crises tend to re-emerge in new forms when their underlying causes are not adequately addressed. He added that conflicts lacking fair and comprehensive settlements continue to undermine regional peace and security.

He underscored that the effectiveness of mediation and peaceful dispute resolution depends on several key factors, including building trust between parties, respecting national sovereignty, adhering to international law, and fostering dialogue and mutual understanding.

Highlighting regional priorities, Al Rabkhi stated that the Palestinian issue remains one of the most significant and longstanding challenges affecting Middle East stability. He noted that the Palestinian people continue to await the implementation of internationally agreed principles that guarantee their legitimate rights.

He further stressed that recent developments in the occupied Palestinian territories highlight the human and political consequences of the absence of a viable political settlement. He reiterated Oman’s position that a just and lasting peace requires ending the occupation of Palestinian territories and enabling the Palestinian people to achieve self-determination and establish an independent state based on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The Omani delegation emphasized that sustainable peace in the Middle East requires a collective commitment to treating peace as a strategic choice and addressing conflict drivers as an investment in regional stability and future generations.

Oman also called for stronger support for mediation efforts, preventive diplomacy, and coordination between international and regional initiatives to build trust and create conditions conducive to durable political solutions.

Reaffirming its foreign policy approach based on wisdom, moderation, mutual respect, and good neighbourliness, Oman stated that it will continue to support all efforts aimed at promoting dialogue, understanding, and lasting peace in the region.
