Oman Reaffirms Commitment to Marine Conservation on World Oceans Day

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: On the occasion of World Oceans Day, observed annually on 8 June, the Sultanate of Oman reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting the marine environment and promoting ecological sustainability. Widely recognised as a regional leader in environmental preservation, Oman continues to advance its integrated efforts to safeguard its marine ecosystems.
With an extensive coastline stretching approximately 3,165 kilometres, Oman is endowed with rich marine biodiversity. Its coastal and marine ecosystems are home to vibrant coral reefs, diverse fish species, seabirds, and rare and endangered species such as sea turtles. These natural assets place the protection of marine resources at the forefront of Oman’s environmental strategy.
At the core of the Sultanate’s conservation efforts is the Environment Authority, which is tasked with developing and implementing national strategies to protect oceans and coastal regions. The Authority carries out comprehensive studies and research to address pressing marine challenges, including pollution, overfishing, and the adverse impacts of climate change.
Among the flagship initiatives is the Artificial Coral Reefs Project, designed to rehabilitate damaged coral reefs, enhance biodiversity, support sustainable fishing practices, and safeguard coastal zones. The project exemplifies Oman’s forward-thinking approach to marine conservation.
The Sultanate has also designated a number of marine reserves, such as Ras Al Jinz Marine Reserve, Daymaniyat Islands Marine Reserve, and Al Khor Marine Reserve. These protected areas serve as critical sanctuaries for endangered marine species and help preserve vital habitats.
Public awareness and education play a key role in Oman’s marine conservation strategy. The Sultanate regularly conducts campaigns and workshops to engage the community—particularly the youth—in efforts to preserve marine life and promote environmental stewardship.
In addition, Oman places strong emphasis on international cooperation. The country actively participates in global environmental programmes and agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity, thereby reinforcing its role as a responsible member of the international community in safeguarding marine ecosystems.
Through a holistic approach that combines sound policymaking, innovative environmental projects, and strong community and international partnerships, the Sultanate of Oman continues to set a distinguished example in marine environment protection on the global stage.
