Oman to Develop Regulatory Framework for Children’s Use of Social Media Following Sultan’s Directive

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: His Majesty Haitham bin Tarik has directed the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive assessment of children’s use of social media and develop appropriate regulatory measures aimed at ensuring their safe and responsible engagement with digital platforms.
The directive comes amid the rapid growth of social media and its increasing popularity among children and young users, raising concerns about the potential risks associated with online activities.
According to the directive, authorities have been tasked with examining the issue from all perspectives, carrying out a detailed analysis, and preparing the necessary regulations, controls and mechanisms to govern children’s use of social media platforms.
The proposed framework is intended to support families in guiding their children toward safe and beneficial use of digital technologies. It is also expected to provide parents with effective tools to monitor and manage their children’s online activities while maintaining a balance between the opportunities offered by social media and the need to protect young users from potential harm.
His Majesty emphasized the importance of drawing upon successful international experiences and best practices in developing the proposed measures, ensuring that the regulatory framework aligns with global standards while addressing local needs.
The initiative reflects Oman’s ongoing commitment to enhancing child protection in the digital era and promoting the responsible use of technology among younger generations.
Officials said the planned measures aim to create a safer online environment for children, strengthen parental guidance, and encourage the positive and productive use of digital platforms across society.
