Peng Liyuan Calls for Global Commitment to Strengthen TB Prevention and Treatment

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping and World Health Organization (WHO) goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS, has urged the international community to intensify efforts, increase investment, and take decisive action to enhance global TB prevention and treatment.

In a written statement addressed to the WHO World TB Day 2025, Peng acknowledged the substantial progress made in combating TB globally, attributing this achievement to the resolute efforts of the WHO and the global community. She noted that since 2000, approximately 79 million lives have been saved through dedicated interventions.

Peng lauded the WHO’s initiative to hold a virtual meeting under the theme “Commit, Invest, Deliver”, emphasizing the importance of rallying collective strength to address the public health challenge posed by TB.

Reflecting on her decade-long involvement, Peng shared her experiences of visiting numerous medical facilities, schools, and communities, both domestically and internationally. She expressed her appreciation for the remarkable progress in TB prevention, particularly in China, where the government has prioritized TB control as part of the Healthy China strategy.

Highlighting China’s commitment, Peng stated that the country has made significant strides in developing TB control technologies and implementing a “patient-centered support and care” approach. She proudly noted that China has maintained a TB cure rate of over 90 percent.

While expressing optimism, Peng acknowledged the persistent challenges in eradicating TB, emphasizing that global cooperation and sustained commitment are essential to achieving the goal of ending the epidemic.

Peng pledged to continue collaborating with global partners to promote TB prevention and treatment, fostering a sense of compassion and solidarity in safeguarding public health.

“Let us work together to build a global community of health for all,” she concluded.
