Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has warned that smuggling poses a serious threat to Indonesia’s sovereignty, national security and the well-being of its people, stressing the need to strengthen the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) to safeguard the country’s resources and territory.

Addressing the commemoration of the 81st anniversary of the TNI in Cilangkap, Jakarta, on Monday, President Prabowo said the illegal trafficking of Indonesia’s natural resources abroad could undermine national sovereignty, while the smuggling of narcotics into the country posed a serious threat to national survival and public welfare.

He underscored the government’s commitment to protecting the Indonesian people, territory and national wealth so that the country’s resources could deliver greater benefits to its citizens.

President Prabowo said a strong TNI was essential to supporting national efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger and to securing a better future for generations to come.

Recalling the historical roots of the armed forces, he said the TNI was born from the people and developed alongside the struggles of the Indonesian nation. He described it as a force of freedom fighters that existed even before the state had the capacity to allocate a budget for its operations.

The president called on the TNI to dedicate its full strength to protecting the people and urged military personnel to remain close to communities and be present whenever their services were required.

He also highlighted the scale of Indonesia’s geographical and strategic challenges, noting that the country has vast maritime territory, thousands of islands, extensive borders and numerous strategic assets that require continuous protection.

While acknowledging the significant responsibilities confronting the TNI, President Prabowo expressed confidence in its ability to carry out its duties and protect Indonesia’s national interests.

The 81st TNI anniversary ceremony involved 3,378 personnel representing the Indonesian Army, Navy and Air Force. During the ceremony, President Prabowo also inaugurated 204 new military units, including six regional military commands.
