President Ilham Aliyev Inaugurates Renovated Central Botanical Garden in Baku

Baku, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, accompanied by First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and their family, attended the inauguration of the newly renovated Central Botanical Garden in Baku. The extensive project involved significant landscaping, renovations, construction, and expansion, transforming the garden into a modern ecological and recreational space.

Eldar Azizov, Head of the Baku City Executive Authority, briefed the attendees on the comprehensive improvements. The project, initiated under President Aliyev’s directives, expanded the garden’s area from 39 hectares to 45 hectares. Enhancements included the construction of a new entrance complex, modern greenhouses, and a fountain, alongside the planting of rare ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers sourced internationally.

The upgraded garden now features a three-block greenhouse complex, a lake area, an observation deck, and a children’s entertainment zone. A modern four-story administrative building was constructed, while a crescent-shaped two-story administrative building underwent thorough restoration. A 650-meter pedestrian bridge with elevators, two restaurants, a maze-shaped greenery area, and a parking lot were also added. Preservation of the historical design of the old entrance and reconstruction of perimeter walls maintained the garden’s heritage. Modern infrastructure improvements included lighting, benches, fire safety systems, video surveillance, and an advanced irrigation system covering 26 hectares.

The Central Botanical Garden, established in 1934 to conserve Azerbaijan’s plant biodiversity, continues to play a pivotal role in ecological preservation, scientific research, and public education. The recent renovations underscore Azerbaijan’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the sustainable use of plant biodiversity.

President Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, who inspected the garden’s progress during visits in July 2023 and June 2024, reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing Azerbaijan’s ecological and cultural landmarks.
