President Prabowo Chairs High-Level Meeting on Giant Sea Wall Project

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Prabowo Subianto chaired a limited ministerial meeting on Tuesday at the Merdeka Palace to discuss the government’s preparedness to commence construction of a giant sea wall along the northern coastline of Java Island, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya confirmed in an official statement.
The initiative is a strategic national effort to mitigate the impacts of climate change, particularly rising sea levels and coastal erosion, and forms a core component of Indonesia’s long-term coastal protection strategy.
“President Prabowo Subianto led a limited meeting regarding the readiness to establish a giant sea wall along the north coast of Java Island,” said Wijaya.
He noted that the sea wall project is not only designed to shield coastal areas from tidal flooding and land subsidence but is also expected to serve as a source of clean water for communities in affected regions.
“The construction of this sea wall is expected to prevent tidal flooding, reduce coastal subsidence, and become a clean water reservoir,” Wijaya added.
The project is anticipated to bolster environmental resilience and significantly enhance the protection of communities living along Java’s vulnerable northern coast.
According to Wijaya, the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development is continuing to work closely with relevant stakeholders to advance the initiative. The Ministry of Public Works and Housing, in collaboration with international partners from the Netherlands and South Korea, has been studying the feasibility and technical requirements of the project since 2016.
Preliminary studies have proposed a sea wall stretching approximately 946 kilometers, extending from Cilegon in the west to Gresik in the east.
In addition to sea wall development, President Prabowo also chaired a separate session focusing on nationwide waste management efforts. The government is intensifying its commitment to sustainable waste solutions through a national movement that involves strategic partnerships with investors, coordinated via the Danantara Indonesia Investment Management Agency.
These initiatives underscore the government’s resolve to tackle environmental challenges with long-term infrastructure solutions while promoting inclusive, sustainable development.
