Speaker Puan Maharani Calls for Stronger Indonesia-Africa Parliamentary Cooperation

Nusa Dua, The Gulf Observer: Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani has urged the parliaments of Indonesia and African countries to vigorously voice their aspirations to foster concrete partnerships that benefit their people. During the opening session of the Indonesia-Africa Parliamentary Forum (IAPF) 2024 in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Sunday, Maharani emphasized the crucial role of parliament in leading efforts for peace and prosperity across Africa, Indonesia, and globally.

“I invite us to emphasize that parliament will lead the fight for peace and prosperity in Africa, Indonesia, and globally,” Maharani stated.

Maharani expressed her hope that the forum would significantly enhance the relationship between Indonesia and African countries. She stressed that this enhancement could only be achieved if the parliaments strengthen, rather than duplicate, cooperation between governments.

“Added value will be achieved if IAPF cooperation helps realize the aspirations of people in Africa and Indonesia for a more peaceful and prosperous life,” she affirmed.

Acknowledging the impact of various global crises on citizens, Maharani called for a more proactive role for parliament in addressing global challenges. She highlighted the importance of promoting peace, denouncing violence, and prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy in resolving international issues, particularly in democratic nations where parliament influences policies related to war and peace.

Maharani also emphasized the need for continued support for the Palestinian struggle for independence, the resolution of conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, and the advocacy for peace in conflict-affected regions.

“We face a choice: to foster mutually beneficial cooperation rather than a zero-sum approach, and to strengthen multilateralism rather than pursuing unilateral policies,” she added.

The IAPF, held from August 31 to September 2, 2024, in Bali, is themed “Strengthening the Indonesia-Africa Parliamentary Partnership for Development.” The event, running concurrently with the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) High-Level Forum (FTT), is expected to host approximately 855 participants from various countries. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is scheduled to attend the event.
