Türkiye Inaugurates First Neuroscience Research Centre in Ankara

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye takes a monumental step in advancing neuroscience and neurotechnology with the inauguration of its first-ever multidisciplinary centre, the Neuroscience and Neurotechnology Centre of Excellence (NOROM). Positioned to be a transformative force in safeguarding and enhancing brain health, NOROM is committed to pioneering innovative approaches to combat a spectrum of diseases, including Alzheimer’s, autism, and migraine, thereby making substantial contributions to medical advancements in the field.

At a press briefing in Ankara, NOROM’s head, Hayrunnisa Bolay Belen, provided comprehensive insights into the centre’s objectives and capabilities. Established through collaboration with Gazi University and Middle East Technical University in Ankara, NOROM is poised to emerge as a hub for cutting-edge brain research in Türkiye.

Central to NOROM’s groundbreaking initiatives is the deployment of Siemens Healthineers’ MRI system, a technological marvel that facilitates detailed brain imaging. As the first of its kind in Türkiye, this system plays a critical role in measuring brain activity, understanding interregional interactions within the brain, and diagnosing, treating, and researching various brain diseases.

NOROM and Siemens Healthineers Türkiye are on the verge of signing a research contract, signaling a commitment to contributing to the ongoing development of medical imaging technology.

Hayrunnisa Bolay Belen emphasized NOROM’s global outreach, stating, “Despite being a ‘very new centre,’ with infrastructure that can be preferred by the ‘best in different parts’ of the world, NOROM aims to actively engage in neuroscience and neurotechnology research globally.” The centre is poised to attract researchers worldwide, positioning itself as a leading hub through its mission, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and diverse research opportunities.

“We prioritise discovering molecular, biochemical, imaging and electrophysiological fingerprints specific to neuropsychiatric disorders and brain diseases and defining new treatment targets,” added Belen, outlining NOROM’s dedication to advancing the frontiers of neuroscience.

NOROM’s establishment marks a historic milestone in Türkiye’s pursuit of excellence in brain research and neurotechnology, setting the stage for transformative advancements in medical science.
