Türkiye Welcomes First Floating Gas Production Facility in Çanakkale
Çanakkale, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye has taken a significant step toward enhancing its energy independence with the inauguration of its first floating gas production facility, located in the western province of Çanakkale. The facility, which will serve as the country’s production base at sea, is set to double the current output from the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea.
Speaking at the launch event on Friday, Türkiye’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar hailed the facility as a game-changer for the nation’s energy production. “This facility will double our current production at the Sakarya Gas Field. We will increase our daily production from 10 million cubic meters in the first phase to 20 million cubic meters, enabling us to meet the natural gas needs of an additional 4.4 million households,” he stated.
Bayraktar further elaborated on the facility’s long-term impact, noting that the base is expected to be fully operational within 1.5 years, by 2026. “With this additional production, we will meet 15% of our country’s natural gas demand, up from the current 7.5-8%. This is a very important and historic day for Türkiye,” he added.
The floating facility, which is the size of three football fields, will soon be sent to its designated production site after completing the necessary preparations. It is expected to operate for the next 20 years, with a daily capacity of 10 to 10.5 million cubic meters of gas.
This milestone underscores Türkiye’s efforts to bolster domestic energy production and reduce reliance on foreign energy imports, marking a significant achievement in the country’s long-term energy strategy.
