Turkmen President

Astana, The Gulf Observer: Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov on Wednesday proposed the development of a new United Nations General Assembly resolution aimed at enhancing cooperation between the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea and the United Nations.

Addressing a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the founding countries of IFAS in Astana, the president said the initiative seeks to elevate collaboration between the fund and international structures, particularly UN specialized agencies and bodies, to a new level.

According to official Turkmen media, Berdimuhamedov emphasized that the proposed resolution should reflect ongoing geopolitical and economic transformations worldwide, ensuring that regional environmental priorities remain firmly on the global agenda.

He noted that the summit is taking place against a complex global geopolitical backdrop and underscored the importance of safeguarding issues critical to Central Asia from being overshadowed. The president stressed that saving the Aral Sea, securing its future, and improving the livelihoods of communities in coastal areas constitute both a political and moral responsibility.

Berdimuhamedov further highlighted that addressing the Aral Sea crisis requires coordinated international action, including the mobilization of diplomatic engagement, as well as economic, financial, and organizational resources to tackle pressing environmental, social, and humanitarian challenges.

As part of broader regional efforts, the Turkmen leader also reiterated his country’s proposal to establish a Regional Center for Climate Change Technologies in Central Asia under UN auspices. The center is expected to be launched in Ashgabat in the near future, with the government pledging full support for its operations.

The initiative is seen as a step toward strengthening regional cooperation and advancing sustainable solutions to one of the world’s most pressing environmental crises.
