Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced the renewal of the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation for the next six years. This decision comes following a comprehensive external evaluation process, which yielded positive outcomes, underscoring the Award’s significance in addressing pressing environmental challenges.

The renewal of the prize was unveiled during Oman’s participation, represented by its permanent delegation to UNESCO, in the UNESCO Executive Council’s 219th session, currently underway in Paris until March 27, 2024.

The external evaluation report highlighted the alignment of the Sultan Qaboos Prize with UNESCO’s mandates and competencies, after a meticulous review of relevant documents and analysis of interviews and surveys.

The Prize is deemed consistent with the objectives of UNESCO’s science sector and the UNESCO Programme on “Man and the Biosphere,” recognizing individuals and organizations for their remarkable contributions to environmental conservation.

Furthermore, the report affirmed that the Prize is in harmony with the United Nations’ 2030 sustainable development goals, emphasizing its crucial role in advancing global environmental sustainability efforts.

Moreover, the Sultan Qaboos Prize aligns with key international agreements on climate change and environmental protection, including the Paris Agreement, reinforcing its significance in addressing pressing global challenges.
