Uzbekistan and EU Strengthen Cooperation Ahead of Enhanced Partnership Agreement

Samarkand, The Gulf Observer: On the sidelines of the Samarkand Summit, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan met with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who are currently visiting Uzbekistan.
The leaders engaged in a comprehensive discussion aimed at furthering multifaceted cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union, with a particular emphasis on trade, economic, and investment development. The meeting underscored the importance of active and productive exchanges between the two parties at various levels and highlighted the effective operation of institutional mechanisms for practical interaction.
A focal point of the talks was the ongoing preparation for the signing of an Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, a significant step towards solidifying bilateral relations. Uzbekistan’s trade turnover with EU countries continues to grow dynamically, and the portfolio of investment projects involving major European companies now exceeds €30 billion. Additionally, Uzbekistan remains a primary beneficiary of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), with a regional office of the European Investment Bank (EIB) soon to be established in Tashkent.
In their remarks, the heads of the EU’s key institutions expressed strong support for Uzbekistan’s ongoing economic reform agenda, which is focused on building a New Uzbekistan. They also praised the country’s policies fostering good neighborliness, mutual trust, and partnership in Central Asia.
The leaders also discussed a range of collaborative projects in key sectors such as innovation, green energy, the extractive industry, agriculture, transport, logistics, and digitalization. Special attention was given to the importance of advancing joint programs in tourism, culture, science, education, and healthcare.
Moreover, the upcoming first high-level “Central Asia – European Union” summit was on the agenda, with discussions focused on enhancing regional connectivity under the EU’s Global Gateway strategy. The parties also exchanged views on pressing international and regional issues, including support for Afghanistan’s socio-economic development.
This meeting marks a continued commitment to strengthening ties between Uzbekistan and the European Union, with a shared focus on advancing mutual interests across a range of sectors.
