Uzbekistan to Launch Scientific Satellite by 2028 in Cooperation with SpaceX and International Partners

Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: Uzbekistan is set to make a significant leap in space exploration with the planned launch of its first scientific and technical satellite by 2028, according to Mukhiddin Ibragimov, Deputy Director of the national Space Research Agency “Uzbekcosmos.”

Speaking in an interview with Kazakhstan’s Kazinform agency, Ibragimov revealed that negotiations are underway with American aerospace giant SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, to facilitate the satellite’s launch. He highlighted the complexities involved in such international operations, noting that launch schedules are approved two to three years in advance, making it crucial to finalize agreements and technical documentation in a timely manner.

“Deadlines for satellite launches are tightly coordinated on a global scale. We must secure our launch window and ensure all technical preparations are completed accordingly,” Ibragimov stated.

As part of the mission, seven Uzbek students began master’s studies in 2024 at Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan. These students are directly involved in designing, assembling, and preparing the satellite for launch. Their education is expected to conclude in 2027, aligning with the targeted 2028 launch window.

The project may also benefit from regional collaboration. Uzbekistan has expressed interest in implementing the satellite mission under the framework of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), aiming to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation among member nations.

Uzbekistan’s broader space ambitions have gained momentum in recent years. The country joined the international space exploration treaty in 2023, reinforcing its commitment to peaceful space activities. Additionally, a bilateral space cooperation agreement was signed with Kazakhstan in 2022, opening new avenues for regional collaboration.

The 2028 satellite launch will mark Uzbekistan’s debut in independent satellite development and deployment, signaling the country’s emerging role in the global space community.
