Wang Yi Meets Myanmar Leader Pledges Mutual Support on Core Interests

Nay Pyi Taw, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to supporting each other on issues concerning their core national interests.

Wang, who also serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the resilience and steady development of China-Myanmar relations, noting that their ties have withstood the tests of history. He reiterated China’s longstanding policy of friendship towards all the people of Myanmar, underlining China’s adherence to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs and respect for Myanmar’s political traditions and chosen path of development.

“We appreciate Myanmar’s adherence to the one-China principle and its firm support for China on issues concerning our core interests,” Wang stated. He further affirmed China’s unwavering support for Myanmar in safeguarding its independence, sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity.

Wang also conveyed China’s opposition to chaos and war in Myanmar, as well as interference by external forces in Myanmar’s internal affairs. He criticized any attempts to drive a wedge between China and Myanmar or to smear China’s image.

Highlighting the opportunities that China’s modernization and deepening reforms will bring to the world, especially to neighboring countries like Myanmar, Wang expressed China’s willingness to deepen cooperation with Myanmar in various fields. He also called for the effective safeguarding of Chinese personnel and projects in Myanmar, the maintenance of peace and stability along the China-Myanmar border, and joint efforts to combat cross-border crimes to ensure a safe environment for bilateral exchanges and cooperation.

In response, Min Aung Hlaing emphasized Myanmar’s strong commitment to its relationship with China, reaffirming adherence to the one-China principle and the importance of being a trusted friendly neighbor to China. He highlighted the upcoming 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Myanmar and China in 2025 as an opportunity for both nations to organize celebratory activities, further strengthening their traditional friendship and promoting the development of bilateral ties.

Min Aung Hlaing also expressed gratitude for China’s constructive role in promoting peace talks in northern Myanmar and voiced hopes for continued Chinese support in maintaining domestic stability and achieving political reconciliation in Myanmar. Additionally, he reiterated Myanmar’s willingness to cooperate with China in combating transnational crimes such as internet gambling and wire fraud, pledging that Myanmar would not allow any activities that threaten China’s security and interests.
