Vietnam and Russia Strengthen Ties, Focus on Expanding Economic Cooperation
Moscow, The Gulf Observer: Deputy Prime Minister Trần Hồng Hà of Vietnam and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Chernyshenko co-chaired the 25th meeting of the Vietnam-Russia Intergovernmental Committee on Economic-Trade and Scientific-Technological Cooperation, held in Moscow.
In his opening remarks, Chernyshenko expressed condolences to the Vietnamese government and people for the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi, affirming Russia’s willingness to support Vietnam during this challenging time. He underscored the long-standing and important partnership between the two nations, acknowledging the Vietnamese government’s close cooperation through the intergovernmental committee mechanism, which has been instrumental in advancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
Deputy PM Hà reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia and enhancing the traditional friendship between the two nations. He emphasized that the meeting served to further the political and diplomatic will of both countries, building on the outcomes of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Vietnam in June 2024 and the recent phone discussions between President Putin and Vietnamese General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm in August 2024. Hà noted that these interactions have played a key role in deepening the comprehensive partnership.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed the results of their ongoing cooperation, proposed solutions to existing challenges, and outlined orientations for future collaboration. They reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering political trust, increasing the exchange of delegations at all levels, and maintaining a hotline between the intergovernmental sub-committees’ co-chairs. Efforts to enhance bilateral trade, particularly in agriculture and pharmaceuticals, were discussed, with a shared goal of increasing import-export turnover and promoting balanced and sustainable trade.
The two countries also agreed on specific measures to further cooperation in areas such as agriculture, industry, energy (including oil and gas), information-communications, science-education, culture-sport, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. They highlighted the importance of language education, with plans to expand the teaching of Vietnamese in Russia and Russian in Vietnam, and agreed to maintain scholarships for Vietnamese students while encouraging Russian students to study and conduct research in Vietnam.
The 26th meeting of the Vietnam-Russia Intergovernmental Committee is scheduled to be held in Vietnam in 2025.
As part of the day’s proceedings, the Vietnam-Russia Committee on Educational, Scientific, and Technological Cooperation held its fifth session. In the morning, Deputy PM Hà also visited the Moscow Mining Institute under the National University of Science and Technology MISIS.
This meeting marks another milestone in the long-standing cooperation between Vietnam and Russia, reaffirming their shared commitment to fostering stronger ties in the years ahead.
