Indonesia Strengthens Cultural Diplomacy with Cambodia to Deepen Bilateral Relations

Phnom Penh, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia is intensifying efforts to strengthen cultural diplomacy with Cambodia as part of its commitment to enhancing relations between the two nations. Director of Public Diplomacy at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ani Nigeriawati, highlighted these initiatives during a public lecture at the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh on Wednesday.

Nigeriawati emphasized Indonesia’s dedication to fostering people-to-people connections through a range of policies and programs. Among these is the Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship (BSBI), established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2003. The program, which now boasts over 1,071 alumni across 84 countries, has played a significant role in introducing global participants to Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage.

“Cambodia, with 24 alumni, is one of the countries with the highest number of participants,” Nigeriawati noted. “This is why Cambodia has been selected to host BSBI 2024 and will also be the first country to hold an alumni reunion and refresh program.”

She added that the program aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s vision of advancing cultural diplomacy as a cornerstone of Indonesia’s foreign policy.

Beyond educational initiatives, Indonesia is strengthening ties through gastronomy, fashion, and films. Nigeriawati highlighted the potential of the film industry, particularly Indonesia’s popular horror genre, as an avenue for deepening cultural exchanges.

Looking ahead, Indonesia plans to host a film and culinary festival in Cambodia next year, further celebrating the shared cultural connection between the two nations.

In his remarks, San Phalla, Vice Chancellor of the Royal University of Fine Arts, underscored the importance of collaboration in education, arts, and culture. He emphasized these areas as focal points in the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Cambodia.

The event reflects both nations’ mutual commitment to strengthening cultural ties and fostering enduring partnerships.
