AASTU Leads Ethiopia’s Ambitious Push into Peaceful Nuclear Energy

AASTU

Addis Ababa, The Gulf Observer: Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU) has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to apply nuclear technology in healthcare, agriculture, and energy, marking a pivotal moment in Ethiopia’s scientific and developmental trajectory.

According to Derejew Ayele, head of AASTU’s Nuclear Technology Center, the university’s cutting-edge research is aimed at harnessing nuclear energy to meet critical national needs, including improving public health, enhancing agricultural productivity, and expanding the country’s energy generation capacity.

To accelerate this vision, AASTU is forming strategic international partnerships with top-tier institutions in Russia, South Korea, and China, nations renowned for their advancements in nuclear science.

IAEA Recognition and Global Partnerships

In a major milestone, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently designated AASTU as the African Center for Nuclear Science and Technology, solidifying its status as a continental leader in peaceful nuclear research.

Building on this momentum, AASTU has signed a tripartite agreement with the IAEA and Tsinghua University — one of China’s premier research institutions — to establish and develop the African Nuclear Science and Technology Center. This collaboration will serve as a cornerstone for R&D, capacity building, and knowledge transfer in nuclear applications across Africa.

Center of Excellence and Expanding Applications

In parallel, AASTU has launched a dedicated Center of Excellence in Nuclear Technology, reinforcing Ethiopia’s commitment to using nuclear energy as a sustainable solution for socio-economic development. Current projects are already exploring:

  • Medical uses, such as advanced diagnostics and cancer treatments
  • Agricultural innovations, including pest control and crop enhancement using radiation-based methods
  • Alternative energy solutions, aimed at supplementing Ethiopia’s national power grid

Derejew highlighted the transformative potential of these innovations, stressing that peaceful nuclear applications can directly contribute to Ethiopia’s long-term developmental goals.

Public Awareness and Future Outlook

In support of this nuclear strategy, the Ethiopian government is also working to raise public awareness about the safe, peaceful, and beneficial uses of nuclear energy — a vital step toward national acceptance and policy support.

With international recognition, robust partnerships, and a clear strategic roadmap, AASTU is positioning itself as a regional powerhouse for nuclear innovation, paving the way for Ethiopia to play a greater role in the global nuclear science community.

This initiative reflects not just a scientific leap, but a broader continental ambition — one where Africa takes charge of its own nuclear future through research, collaboration, and vision.
