President Ilham Aliyev Receives EU Special Representative Magdalena Grono

Baku, The Gulf Observer President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Thursday received Magdalena Grono, the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus.
At the meeting, Grono conveyed the greetings of the European Union leadership to President Aliyev and, on behalf of both the EU leadership and herself, congratulated him on the significant results achieved in Washington regarding the normalization of relations with Armenia and the advancement of the peace agenda. She underlined that the process had made an important contribution to ensuring lasting peace in the South Caucasus, noting that EU member states strongly support the peace reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Grono further reiterated the European Union’s readiness to assist in implementing the agreed issues, including the development of transport corridors between the two countries.
President Aliyev expressed gratitude for the greetings and congratulations, asking Grono to convey his regards to the EU leadership. The Azerbaijani head of state emphasized the importance of the Washington outcomes, particularly highlighting the role of the United States in facilitating the process. He described the Washington Declaration, the initialing of the peace agreement, and the joint appeal by Azerbaijan and Armenia to dissolve the OSCE Minsk Group as key steps toward advancing the peace process.
The discussions also reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s support for confidence-building measures with Armenia, while stressing the importance of establishing uninterrupted transport and transit connectivity between Azerbaijan’s mainland and its Nakhchivan region. Both sides underscored the broad opportunities for cooperation with the EU, particularly in upgrading transport infrastructure in Nakhchivan.
The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on the future prospects of Azerbaijan–EU cooperation.
