Malaysia on Track to Achieve 49% of SDG Targets by 2030, Outpacing Global Average

Kuala Lumpur, The Gulf Observer: Malaysia is projected to achieve 49 percent of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets before 2030, significantly surpassing the global completion average of 18 percent reported for this year, according to recent media reports citing national data from 2023.

The estimate, presented by the country’s deputy economy minister, reflects Malaysia’s steady progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda across key economic, social and environmental dimensions.

Among the 17 SDGs, two goals stood out for their particularly strong performance. SDG 4, which focuses on quality education, has reached 70 percent completion, a milestone attributed to broad-based access to schooling and steady improvements in learning outcomes. SDG 12, aimed at promoting sustainable consumption and production practices, recorded 64 percent progress, supported by rising recycling rates and enhanced management of hazardous waste.

The deputy minister highlighted that eight additional goals are performing above the national average, including those related to gender equality, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and global partnerships.

Malaysia’s SDG assessment follows the framework established by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, which measures progress across 17 goals, 169 targets and 244 indicators. This comprehensive approach provides a detailed understanding of the country’s advancement on sustainable development priorities.

Officials say the latest findings underscore Malaysia’s commitment to accelerating progress ahead of 2030 and strengthening policy coordination to ensure continued improvement across all SDG pillars.
