Turkmenistan Highlights Neutrality and Global Legal Initiatives at Central Asia–EU Interparliamentary Forum in Samarkand

Samarkand, The Gulf Observer: Representatives of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan participated in the First Central Asia–European Union Interparliamentary Cooperation Forum held in Samarkand on March 30–31, where key issues concerning sustainable development, regional cooperation, and global peace were discussed.

The forum brought together parliamentary delegations and stakeholders who engaged in comprehensive discussions on contemporary global challenges. Participants exchanged views on strategic priorities aimed at promoting sustainable development and addressing issues of common interest to humanity.

During his address, the representative of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan emphasized that United Nations member states, including countries from Central Asia and the European Union, consistently support Turkmenistan’s policy of permanent neutrality. He highlighted the country’s constructive role in promoting universal peace and stability through diplomatic initiatives.

Particular attention was drawn to Turkmenistan’s proposal to designate 2028 as the “Year of International Law,” an initiative put forward by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov during his address to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The representative underscored Turkmenistan’s continued commitment to strengthening the primacy of international law and enhancing the central role of the United Nations in global governance.

Turkmen delegates also actively contributed to discussions across three major thematic areas of the forum. They showcased Turkmenistan’s ongoing programmes and projects focused on ensuring peace and security, promoting environmental sustainability, reinforcing legal frameworks for cooperation, and expanding regional connectivity through transport corridors.

Moreover, the discussions highlighted efforts to advance investment opportunities, improve access to energy resources, and foster development in key sectors such as science, education, and tourism.

The forum served as a significant platform for strengthening interparliamentary dialogue between Central Asia and the European Union, reinforcing mutual commitment to cooperation, stability, and sustainable progress.
