Vietnam Emerges as Regional Leader in Broadband Infrastructure

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: Việtnam has officially joined the ranks of regional leaders in broadband telecommunications infrastructure, a milestone achieved through aggressive 5G deployment, rapid broadband expansion, and strategic spectrum management.

The Rise of Next-Generation Connectivity

As of early 2026, the nation’s telecommunications landscape has seen transformative growth. Key performance indicators now place Việt Nam among the global elite:

• 5G Reach: Over 4,000 BTS stations have been installed nationwide, covering 90% of the population.
• Mobile Performance: With nearly 23 million 5G subscribers, average download speeds have reached 188 Mbps, ranking Việt Nam 14th globally.
• Fixed Broadband: Fiber optic networks now connect 23.8 million households, with speeds reaching 288 Mbps, securing the 9th position worldwide.

Strategic Spectrum Planning and 6G Aspirations

The Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) emphasizes that effective spectrum planning has been the backbone of this success. The Vietnam Telecommunications Authority has developed a roadmap covering three strategic frequency bands, including the mmWave band (24.25 to 27.5 GHz) for terrestrial networks.

To meet future demands, MoST forecasts a sharp rise in spectrum requirements:

• 5G Advanced: Approximately 200 MHz per operator.
• 6G Infrastructure: Up to 400 MHz per operator.

While 5G continues to evolve, the shift toward 6G is expected to catalyze innovations in virtual reality for healthcare and education, as well as large-scale IoT for smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and smart factories. Furthermore, the integration of terrestrial and satellite networks is set to eliminate connectivity gaps in remote and rural areas.

Looking Toward 2028 and Beyond

With global 6G testing anticipated by 2028, Việt Nam is taking a proactive stance. The government has already established steering committees and tasked enterprises and universities with 6G research. These initiatives ensure the nation remains synchronized with global technological shifts, maintaining its momentum as a powerhouse in digital infrastructure.
