Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: The United Arab Emirates has announced an emergency humanitarian assistance package worth US$30 million to support civilians affected by the worsening humanitarian situation in El Obeid, North Kordofan, Sudan, under the directives of President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The aid, to be delivered through the UAE Aid Agency, aims to address the urgent needs of civilians and displaced persons facing severe shortages of food, healthcare, safe drinking water, and shelter amid the deteriorating security situation in the region.

The UAE stressed the importance of an immediate and coordinated humanitarian response to ensure life-saving assistance reaches those most in need, particularly vulnerable groups. It also called on all parties to the conflict to comply with international humanitarian law, protect civilians, avoid military escalation in populated areas, and facilitate the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.

Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State and Member of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, said the emergency response reflects the UAE leadership’s enduring commitment to placing humanitarian principles at the forefront of its international efforts. He emphasized that protecting civilians, establishing safe humanitarian corridors, and supporting displaced people, children, women, the elderly, and the sick must remain the highest priority.

He added that the UAE would continue working closely with humanitarian organizations and international partners to alleviate civilian suffering, strengthen relief operations, and ensure that humanitarian concerns are not politicized. He also underscored the importance of independent and impartial accountability mechanisms for violations of international humanitarian law.

According to the UAE, it has provided approximately US$800 million in assistance to Sudan since the outbreak of the crisis, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to supporting the Sudanese people, refugees, displaced persons, and host communities affected by the conflict.

Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, said the latest assistance forms part of the UAE’s broader humanitarian pledges implemented in cooperation with the United Nations and its partners to provide food, healthcare, shelter, and other essential services across Sudan and neighbouring countries.

The UAE reiterated that there is no military solution to the Sudan crisis and called for renewed efforts to protect civilians, expand humanitarian access, halt the violence, and advance a Sudanese civilian-led political process that preserves the country’s unity, stability, and long-term peace.
