Türkiye Poised for Third-Largest Natural Gas Storage Capacity in Europe

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: In a strategic move towards bolstering its energy infrastructure, Türkiye is set to secure the third-largest natural gas storage capacity in Europe.

Currently, Europe boasts approximately 100 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas storage, with Germany leading at 24 bcm and Italy following at 16 bcm.

Leveraging its extensive experience in natural gas utilization for electricity generation and heating, Türkiye aims to claim the third position with an expanded storage capacity of 14.4 bcm by the completion of ambitious expansion projects in 2028.

Over the past four decades, Türkiye has demonstrated commitment to enhancing its natural gas supply and processing infrastructure, marked by substantial investments in pipelines, liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, offshore gas exploration, and oil exploration fleets. The nation’s focused efforts reflect a dedication to meeting growing energy demands and ensuring a robust energy security framework.

At the core of this expansion initiative are Türkiye’s flagship underground natural gas storage facilities located in Silivri and Tuz Golu, which serve as pivotal elements in the country’s quest to play a significant role in the European natural gas landscape.
