Erdogan, NATO Chief Discuss Alliance Agenda, Ankara Summit Preparations

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday held talks in Ankara focusing on preparations for the upcoming NATO leaders’ summit, the alliance’s strategic agenda, and key regional and global developments.
According to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, President Erdogan emphasized that the increasingly unstable regional environment underscores the critical importance of solidarity and enhanced cooperation among NATO allies.
He expressed confidence that the forthcoming summit in Ankara would yield substantive decisions aimed at strengthening unity within the alliance and improving its readiness to respond effectively to emerging crises.
Highlighting Türkiye’s growing defense capabilities, Erdogan noted that the country continues to expand its defense industry, particularly in the field of air defense systems, while seeking to deepen cooperation with allied nations.
Stressing the indispensable nature of the transatlantic bond, the Turkish president said Ankara expects the European pillar of the alliance to assume greater responsibility. He cautioned that excluding non-European Union allies from the bloc’s defense initiatives would be counterproductive.
Erdogan further reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to peace and diplomacy, particularly in the wake of recent developments following attacks on Iran.
On the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, he said Türkiye remains actively engaged in efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution, including initiatives to revive negotiations and enable dialogue at the leadership level.
During the meeting, Erdogan and Rutte also held a comprehensive exchange of views on preparations for the NATO Ankara Summit, reaffirming their commitment to close coordination within the alliance.
