Iran’s UN Envoy Says US Naval Blockade Violates Ceasefire, Calls for Lifting Before Talks Resume

New York, The Gulf Observer: Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has stated that the United States’ naval blockade constitutes a violation of the ceasefire agreement and must be lifted before negotiations between the two sides can resume.

Speaking to reporters at the United Nations headquarters on Tuesday, Iravani emphasized that the continuation of the blockade undermines diplomatic efforts, asserting that its removal is a prerequisite for any renewed dialogue.

“The US naval blockade is a violation of the ceasefire,” he said, adding that once the restrictions are lifted, the next round of negotiations could potentially be held in Islamabad.

The Iranian envoy reiterated Tehran’s position that Washington initiated the conflict, noting that Iran remains open to a political resolution if the United States demonstrates genuine intent to return to negotiations. “If they seek a political solution, we will be ready,” he said.

However, Iravani also issued a warning, stating that Iran is equally prepared to respond if the situation escalates militarily. “If they want to enter a war, then Iran is also ready for that,” he cautioned.

When asked about the prospects for renewed talks, he expressed cautious optimism, saying that an opportunity for diplomacy must be preserved. “We are hopeful,” he added.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions following the conflict that began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched military actions against Iran, targeting senior leadership and military figures.

After 40 days of hostilities, a two-week ceasefire was reached on April 8 through Pakistan’s mediation, paving the way for negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting resolution to the conflict.
