Irish Parliamentary Delegation Visits Shusha and Khankendi, Reviews Reconstruction Efforts

Baku, The Gulf Observer: An Irish parliamentary delegation led by Tony McCormack, Convenor of the Friends of Azerbaijan Group in the Houses of the Oireachtas, visited the cities of Shusha and Khankendi on April 23 as part of an official trip to Azerbaijan.
The delegation’s tour of Shusha began at the City Square, where members were briefed on the damage inflicted during the period of occupation. They were informed that statues of prominent Azerbaijani cultural figures—including Khurshidbanu Natavan, Bulbul, and Uzeyir Hajibeyli—had been targeted and damaged.
The delegation also visited key historical and cultural landmarks, including the Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque, the Shusha Fortress walls, and the Jidir Duzu Plain, gaining insight into the city’s heritage and ongoing restoration efforts.
In Khankendi, the Irish lawmakers toured Victory Square and Garabagh University, and observed large-scale reconstruction projects being implemented by the Azerbaijani government.
Officials briefed the delegation on the progress of post-conflict rehabilitation, noting that normal life is gradually returning to the liberated territories. The return of former internally displaced persons to their homes is continuing alongside infrastructure development and urban revitalization.
The visit provided the Irish delegation with a comprehensive overview of Azerbaijan’s reconstruction initiatives and efforts to restore socio-economic stability in the region.
