Kazakhstan Strengthens UNESCO Cooperation, Advances Cultural Heritage Initiatives

Astana, The Gulf Observer: Senior officials from relevant government agencies and national committees responsible for UNESCO programs in Kazakhstan convened to discuss the country’s ongoing cooperation with international cultural organizations and preparations for upcoming heritage and cultural events.

Opening the meeting, State Counselor Yerlan Karin highlighted the growing partnership between Kazakhstan and international organizations, noting the significant role played by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in advancing cultural diplomacy and heritage preservation efforts.

“The personal attention and support of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev have significantly strengthened Kazakhstan’s cooperation with UNESCO and ISESCO in recent years,” Karin said. “As a result, positive decisions have been made to include new nominations from Kazakhstan in the World Heritage lists, while large-scale international projects and events in the cultural and humanitarian sphere organized by the country have received active support.”

Participants reviewed preparations for a number of major international cultural events, including commemorative activities marking the 100th anniversaries of renowned Kazakh opera singer Yermek Serkebayev and acclaimed film director Abdollah Karsakbayev. The anniversary celebrations are scheduled to be held at UNESCO Headquarters and are expected to highlight Kazakhstan’s contributions to global culture and the arts.

The meeting also focused on Kazakhstan’s participation in the upcoming 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea. A key agenda item will be the consideration of Kazakhstan’s nomination of the “Underground Mosques of Mangystau” for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Officials emphasized the importance of continued engagement with UNESCO and other international organizations to promote Kazakhstan’s cultural heritage, strengthen international cooperation, and enhance the country’s presence on the global cultural stage.

The discussions reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to preserving its historical and cultural legacy while advancing initiatives that foster intercultural dialogue and international collaboration.
