Macron Urges Global Scientists to “Choose France” Amid US Research Cuts

France

Paris, The Gulf Observer: French President Emmanuel Macron has extended an open invitation to scientists worldwide to relocate to France or Europe, amid deepening cuts to research funding under US President Donald Trump’s administration.

In a message posted on X, Macron emphasized France’s commitment to science and innovation, declaring:
“Here in France, research is a priority, innovation a culture, science a limitless horizon. Researchers from all over the world, choose France, choose Europe! See you on May 5.”

Although Macron did not name the United States directly, his remarks come as hundreds of researchers face layoffs and program cancellations across American universities — fallout critics say stems from Trump’s broader confrontation with elite academic institutions. The US administration has pointed to last year’s wave of pro-Palestinian campus protests as a rationale for tightening oversight and funding cuts, though academics argue the measures are an attack on freedom of expression and academic independence.

Sensing an opportunity, European leaders are moving swiftly to attract displaced talent. On Friday, France launched the “Choose France for Science” initiative, managed by the French National Research Agency (ANR). Through this program, universities, schools, and research organizations will be able to apply for government co-funding to host international scientists.

A dedicated application platform is set to go live on May 5, providing a streamlined way for researchers to find new opportunities in France and Europe.

With this bold new initiative, France is positioning itself as a haven for global scientific talent, hoping to transform political upheaval abroad into an intellectual advantage at home.
