Morocco's Atlas Lions Become Africa's Highest-Earning National Team Across Two FIFA World Cups

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Morocco’s national football team, the Atlas Lions, has become Africa’s highest-earning team across the last two FIFA World Cups, accumulating $58 million in prize money from their historic campaigns in Qatar 2022 and the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup. The achievement underscores Morocco’s emergence as a leading force in African and global football.

According to reports, Morocco earned $25 million after becoming the first African and Arab nation to reach the FIFA World Cup semi-finals in 2022. The team added another $33 million during its 2026 campaign after advancing to the quarter-finals, bringing its combined World Cup earnings to $58 million—the highest total by any African national team.

Although the Atlas Lions’ 2026 World Cup journey ended with a quarter-final defeat to France, the team once again delivered an impressive performance on the global stage, reinforcing Morocco’s growing reputation as one of international football’s most consistent and competitive nations. The campaign followed the country’s historic semi-final run in Qatar and highlighted the continued progress of Moroccan football.

Football analysts attribute Morocco’s sustained success to long-term investment in youth development, improved football infrastructure, effective talent identification, and strategic planning by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. These efforts have enabled the Atlas Lions to compete consistently with the world’s elite teams while setting new benchmarks for African football.

The financial rewards are expected to further strengthen Morocco’s football development programmes, enhance grassroots initiatives, and support preparations for future international competitions, consolidating the country’s position as one of Africa’s foremost footballing nations.
