Oman Affirms Commitment to Women’s Empowerment on Global Stage
Muscat, The Gulf Observer: Oman has reiterated its dedication to advancing the role of women, fostering their social and economic empowerment, and elevating their positions in power and decision-making arenas. This commitment was spotlighted during Oman’s active participation in the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) held in New York until March 22, 2024.
Dr. Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, the Minister of Social Development, represented Oman at the CSW session, where the overarching theme was “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.”
Leading Oman’s delegation, Dr. Laila emphasized the nation’s dedication to formulating policies, legislative systems, and institutional frameworks aimed at enhancing the status of women, safeguarding their rights, and ensuring a dignified life for them.
In her address, Dr. Laila underscored the paramount importance given to women by leaders of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. She highlighted the recognition of women’s pivotal role and contributions to comprehensive national development across the GCC countries.
Furthermore, Dr. Laila played a crucial role in delivering the Arab statement issued at the Arab Regional Preparatory Meeting via videoconferencing. The statement emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, rejected forced displacement of the Palestinian population, and stressed the importance of unimpeded humanitarian aid to the region.
Additionally, the statement raised concerns about an ongoing incitement campaign targeting the World Health Organization and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). It reaffirmed the commitment of Arab countries to ensuring a decent life for women and girls, reflecting the region’s dedication to fostering global peace and well-being.
