Oman Launches ‘Plant Oman 2050’ Initiative Workshop to Advance Sustainability and Food Security

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman on Tuesday launched the inaugural workshop of the ‘Plant Oman 2050’ initiative in Muscat, marking a significant step toward expanding afforestation efforts, enhancing environmental sustainability, and supporting national food security and climate goals.
The two-day workshop was inaugurated under the patronage of Dr. Ahmed Nasser Al Bakri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources for Agriculture, and brought together key stakeholders to outline strategies for increasing vegetation cover and restoring natural ecosystems.
The initiative aims to combat desertification, rehabilitate degraded habitats, and promote biodiversity through the planting of wild and native trees across various governorates. It also seeks to enhance ecosystem efficiency and contribute to the Sultanate’s long-term target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
A central focus of the workshop is strengthening food security by expanding the cultivation of fruit-bearing trees, boosting local agricultural production, and generating sustainable economic value from natural resources. The program further aligns with national climate action strategies by promoting carbon absorption and advancing both blue carbon and green carbon projects.
On the sidelines of the event, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Environment Authority and Oman Agricultural Development Company to implement a research and development project focused on tissue culture protocols for propagating wild trees and mangroves. The agreement is expected to support the preservation of plant genetic resources and strengthen biodiversity conservation efforts.
The agreement was signed by Saud Salim Al Araimi, Director General of Vegetation Cover Development at the Environment Authority, and Ali Said Al Araimi, Chief Executive Officer of the Oman Agricultural Development Company.
The workshop’s first day featured three key sessions covering international expertise, national policies, and technological innovation in agriculture. Discussions included global experiences in combating desertification, sustainable land and water management, investment in the agricultural sector, and the application of advanced technologies such as smart irrigation systems and soil enhancement techniques.
Participants also explored climate finance opportunities, carbon markets, and the role of biodiversity and agricultural research in advancing environmental sustainability. The workshop underscores Oman’s commitment to leveraging international partnerships and innovative solutions to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.
