Brussels, The Gulf Observer: The 45th edition of the iconic Brussels 20 km is set to energize the Belgian capital today, with more than 45,000 participants – including runners, walkers, and athletes with disabilities – gathering for one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year.
This year’s edition showcases an impressive global footprint, with participants representing 141 nationalities. Notably, 45.3% of the participants are women, marking a significant 4% increase from last year. In addition to the tens of thousands of runners, the event will welcome 7,000 walkers and 1,800 para-athletes – a rise of over 30% compared to the previous edition.
“We also see that the audience is getting younger every year,” said Carine Verstraeten of organiser Brussels Promotion. “We want to emphasise that everyone should run at their own pace to ensure a safe and enjoyable race for all.”
Race Through the Heart of Brussels
The route begins at the iconic Parc du Cinquantenaire, where para-athletes will kick off the race at 09:30. Runners will follow in six waves starting at 10:00, with walkers beginning their journey at 11:30.
The course winds through some of Brussels’ most notable landmarks and neighborhoods, including Schuman, the Palais de Justice, Avenue Louise, Bois de la Cambre, Chaussée de la Hulpe, Parc de Woluwe, Montgomery, and Merode, before returning to a newly established finish area at Cinquantenaire.
To accommodate the massive turnout, changing rooms will be provided free of charge inside the Royal Army Museum in Parc du Cinquantenaire. Lockers are also available for a fee, ensuring convenience and security for all participants.
The Brussels 20 km continues to be a symbol of community, inclusion, and international spirit, uniting people of all abilities and backgrounds in celebration of fitness and resilience.
