Astana, The Gulf Observer: President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a telephone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in early December, focusing on the evolving global political landscape, including the situation in Ukraine. Speaking to Ana Tili newspaper, President Tokayev outlined Kazakhstan’s vision for its future relations with the United States under the new administration.

During the call, President Tokayev described their discussion as “insightful and open,” noting that President-elect Trump views Kazakhstan as a vital strategic partner for the U.S. The two leaders agreed to maintain regular high-level contacts and explore avenues for cooperation in trade, investment, security, and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. Tokayev emphasized that these priorities have underpinned three decades of mutually beneficial relations between the two nations, which he helped establish in the mid-1990s.

The Ukraine Conflict and the Role of the U.S.

The conversation also touched on the conflict in Ukraine, with President-elect Trump seeking Kazakhstan’s perspective on a potential ceasefire. President Tokayev expressed the complexity of the issue, highlighting the military resilience of Russia and Ukraine’s reliance on Western allies. He emphasized that a resolution requires the will of both conflicting parties and decisive leadership from global powers, including the United States.

Kazakhstan has consistently advocated for dialogue and peaceful resolution since the onset of the conflict. “Tension in the international arena inevitably impacts trade and political relations,” Tokayev remarked. He reiterated Kazakhstan’s commitment to pragmatic diplomacy and its readiness to contribute to peace-building efforts.

Navigating Global Challenges

President Tokayev acknowledged the broader geopolitical challenges, including the strained relations between the U.S. and major powers like China and Russia. He underscored Kazakhstan’s aim to minimize external disruptions by fostering pragmatic and mutually beneficial ties with all interested states.

Reflecting on Kazakhstan’s achievements in 2024, Tokayev praised the country’s resilience in navigating unprecedented challenges while advancing its economic and diplomatic goals. He emphasized that Kazakhstan will continue to act in alignment with its capabilities, seeking constructive engagement on the global stage.

As the U.S. transitions to a new administration, Kazakhstan looks forward to strengthening its strategic partnership with the United States and addressing shared global challenges collaboratively.
