Rashid Meredov, Annalena Baerbock Discuss Multilateral Cooperation at UN Meeting

New York, The Gulf Observer: Rashid Meredov held talks with Annalena Baerbock in New York on May 28, 2026, to discuss Turkmenistan’s priorities within the framework of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
During the meeting, Meredov briefed Baerbock on Turkmenistan’s key initiatives relating to international politics and security, sustainable development, climate action, and humanitarian cooperation.
The Turkmen foreign minister reaffirmed his country’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy, strengthening the central coordinating role of the United Nations, and enhancing the effectiveness of the General Assembly as a vital mechanism for maintaining global peace, security, and sustainable development.
Particular attention was given to Turkmenistan’s initiatives in preventive diplomacy, promotion of international law, and fostering a culture of dialogue and trust in international relations. The discussions also highlighted the activities of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in Ashgabat.
In this context, Meredov underscored the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan to proclaim 2028 as the International Year of Law, aimed at strengthening legal mechanisms for maintaining international peace and stability.
The two sides also reviewed matters related to the implementation of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport for 2026–2035, climate and environmental issues, and Turkmenistan’s proposals to establish regional climate centers and advance the Caspian Environmental Initiative.
They further emphasized the significance of the outcomes of the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, held in Avaza, in advancing sustainable development objectives.
On humanitarian cooperation, discussions focused on empowering women and youth, promoting the “Women, Peace and Security” and “Youth, Peace and Security” agendas, and enhancing regional dialogue and cooperation in these areas.
Baerbock praised Turkmenistan’s role in promoting multilateral cooperation, supporting the United Nations and the General Assembly, advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, and strengthening the international transport agenda.
She noted that Turkmenistan’s achievements and practical experience in implementing sustainable development initiatives are regarded within the United Nations as a positive example of effectively advancing the global sustainable development agenda.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the “Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan,” adopted on May 20, 2026. Both sides emphasized the significance of the resolution in further strengthening Turkmenistan’s international standing and promoting the principles of peace, trust, and constructive international cooperation.
The interlocutors also exchanged views on current international and regional developments, stressing the importance of trust-building, dialogue, and constructive engagement in addressing global challenges.
