Russia Pledges Compensation, Oil Support to Sri Lanka as Bilateral Ties Deepen
Colombo, The Gulf Observer: Russia has agreed to initiate compensation procedures for the families of Sri Lankan security personnel who lost their lives while in the country, while also pledging critical energy and economic support to Sri Lanka amid ongoing challenges.
The commitment was made by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko during a high-level meeting with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, held at the ministry premises.
During the discussions, Rudenko emphasized the longstanding friendship between Russia and Sri Lanka, noting that Russian visitors frequently regard Sri Lanka as a highly attractive destination known for its natural beauty and hospitality.
Compensation and Energy Support
Rudenko confirmed that Moscow would begin the necessary procedures to provide compensation to the families of the deceased Sri Lankan personnel, underscoring Russia’s commitment to humanitarian responsibility.
In response to Sri Lanka’s pressing economic and energy challenges, the Russian delegation also pledged immediate assistance, including the provision of essential oil supplies aimed at stabilizing the country’s energy sector.
Boosting Investment and Tourism
Beyond energy cooperation, Russia committed to encouraging private sector investment and increasing the flow of Russian tourists to Sri Lanka, in a bid to support economic recovery and growth.
Rudenko reaffirmed that Russia remains a “reliable and perennial partner,” ready to extend support across multiple sectors whenever required.
Toward Stronger Strategic Partnership
Minister Vijitha Herath expressed appreciation for Russia’s timely support, highlighting that the two countries share nearly 70 years of diplomatic relations.
He noted that the current juncture presents a key opportunity to elevate bilateral ties, announcing Sri Lanka’s intention to pursue several long-term trade agreements with Russia in the coming months.
The meeting reflects a renewed momentum in Colombo-Moscow relations, with both sides signaling a commitment to deepen cooperation in energy, trade, tourism, and humanitarian engagement.
