Colombo, The Gulf Observer: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has emphasized the enduring relevance of Buddhist teachings in promoting peace, coexistence and reconciliation, urging people to embrace the values of non-violence, compassion and loving-kindness in their daily lives.

In his Vesak message marking the most sacred festival in Buddhism, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Lord Buddha, President Dissanayake said that Buddhism offers a timeless and practical path to peace through the Four Sublime Virtues of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity.

The President stressed that lasting peace in society can only be achieved through the cultivation of inner spiritual peace, noting that the Buddhist approach to guiding humanity towards collective noble goals remains highly relevant in the modern world.

He said that peace, coexistence and reconciliation are among the highest teachings not only of the Buddha but also of other enlightened spiritual leaders, underscoring their importance in addressing contemporary social challenges.

Referring to the recent pilgrimage undertaken across Sri Lanka by Venerable Pannakara Thero, President Dissanayake said the journey reflected the universal message of inner harmony, peace and understanding.

The President further noted that Vesak is not only a major religious observance but also an important cultural festival that has, for centuries, embodied Sri Lanka’s identity, unity and artistic heritage.

He highlighted that traditional Vesak activities, including almsgiving, observing sil, meditation and Dhamma sermons, along with community initiatives such as dansals, devotional songs, lantern displays and pandals, play a vital role in fostering mutual understanding, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence among communities.

Extending his Vesak greetings, President Dissanayake called on people to further embrace the values of compassion and boundless loving-kindness towards all living beings and expressed hope that the teachings of the Dhamma would bring peace, comfort and serenity to all.
