Wasit Wetland Centre

Sharjah, The Gulf Observer: In a significant development reflecting the unwavering commitment to environmental conservation, the Wasit Wetland Centre in Sharjah has been admitted to the prestigious Wetland International membership. This accomplishment is part of the ongoing efforts by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) to champion wildlife conservation and maintain biodiversity in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Wetland International, a global network comprising 350 members spread across six continents, serves as a crucial platform for wetland organizations. Formally recognized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, Wetland International plays an essential role in supporting educational wetland centers and Ramsar Convention contracting parties. Through the Wetlands Communication, Education, Participation, and Awareness (CEPA) framework, members can initiate communication programs, community-level educational activities, training programs, knowledge sharing, and access conservation equipment.

At a special event, Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, the Chairperson of Sharjah’s Environment and Protected Areas Authority, received the official certificate of membership from Wetlands International. She expressed her delight at the successful participation of Wasit Wetland Centre, emphasizing that this achievement is a testament to the environmental strategy of the Sharjah government, which places a high priority on the development of wetlands and natural reserves throughout the emirate. These areas not only serve as significant tourist attractions but also play a pivotal role in the broader environmental plan of the emirate.

Wasit Wetland Centre, situated at the convergence of Sharjah city’s land and sea, boasts vast sand dunes, freshwater ponds, mudflats, and coastal lakes with saline water. These diverse habitats provide essential resources for wildlife, offering food, shelter, safety, and optimal conditions for nesting and reproduction.

Aisha Al Midfa, the Centre’s Director, highlighted that the Wasit Wetland Centre has successfully fulfilled its environmental mission by educating visitors about coastal bird species and their habitats. The centre provides a unique opportunity for visitors to connect with birds in large aviaries and multiple bird-watching stations scattered throughout the site.

Home to over 60 species of resident and migratory birds, the centre offers a remarkable chance for visitors to observe these birds in their natural surroundings. Additionally, the centre hosts various educational programs and activities designed to raise awareness about the significance of coastal birds and the challenges they face.

The admission of Wasit Wetland Centre to Wetlands International marks a momentous stride in the conservation efforts of Sharjah, affirming its dedication to fostering biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
