Türkiye’s Zero Waste Project to Thrive Through Global Cooperation

Baku, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye’s Communications Director Fahrettin Altun emphasized the critical role of international cooperation and solidarity in achieving success for Türkiye’s Zero Waste Project, an environmental initiative aimed at combating climate change. Speaking via video link at a roundtable event during the COP29 UN climate conference in Azerbaijan on Monday, Altun highlighted the project’s importance as a symbol of Türkiye’s leadership in environmental diplomacy.

“The Zero Waste Project, a decisive step showcasing Türkiye’s leading role in environmental and climate change diplomacy, will truly succeed through global cooperation and solidarity,” Altun said. The event, organized by the Turkish communications directorate, focused on “strategic communication in the global climate crisis.”

Altun outlined Türkiye’s ambitious target to reach net-zero emissions by 2053, noting that while Türkiye contributes only 1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, it signed the Paris Climate Agreement in 2021 as a testament to its commitment to global climate action. The Zero Waste Project, led by First Lady Emine Erdogan, has garnered international recognition, becoming a prominent feature of Türkiye’s environmental efforts in the “Century of Türkiye.”

He further emphasized Türkiye’s dedication to achieving sustainable development goals, with significant investments in renewable energy aimed at balancing environmental, economic, and social growth. Altun noted that sustainable development is integral to Türkiye’s national planning, economic, ecological, and social frameworks, underscoring the importance of fostering environmentally conscious generations that value nature and adopt responsible production and consumption practices.
