Irthi Director General Highlights Women’s Role in Craft and Cultural Heritage on International Women’s Day

Sharjah, The Gulf Observer: Reem BinKaram, Director General of the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, emphasized that International Women’s Day serves as a powerful platform to honor women’s creativity and excellence, particularly in traditional and contemporary crafts that have shaped cultural heritage throughout history.
She credited the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of Irthi, for driving social and economic empowerment of women. She highlighted how Her Highness’s vision has elevated local craftsmanship onto the global stage, enriching the creative and cultural landscape through innovation.
Reem BinKaram further noted that Emirati women have played a fundamental role in shaping the UAE’s cultural identity, preserving national values across generations through spinning, weaving, embroidery, and pottery. Today, they continue to integrate heritage with contemporary design, creating timeless works that connect the past with the present, showcasing their identity and uniting the world through artistry.
