Turkmenistan Elected to United Nations Economic and Social Council for 2026-2028 Term

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Turkmenistan has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2026-2028, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The election took place during the 75th plenary meeting of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
ECOSOC is the primary UN platform for discussing international economic and social issues and formulating policy recommendations. The Council coordinates the economic and social activities of 15 UN agencies, functional commissions, and five regional commissions. It also plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable development in its three dimensions — economic, social, and environmental.
The Council is tasked with overseeing the implementation of the outcome documents from all major UN conferences and summits related to the economic and social fields. It consists of 54 Member States, elected by the General Assembly for a three-year term, with 18 members elected annually to replace those whose terms have expired. The seats are distributed on a regional basis.
This marks Turkmenistan’s third election to ECOSOC. The country previously served as a member during the 2013-2015 and 2019-2021 terms. Turkmenistan’s continued involvement in ECOSOC underscores its commitment to global economic and social progress, as well as its active participation in international efforts to achieve sustainable development.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan expressed pride in the country’s election and reiterated its dedication to contributing to the work of the Council in addressing key global challenges.
