Turkmenistan Commemorates World Wetlands Day with Environmental Conference
Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: The Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan organized a conference in Ashgabat, bringing together experts, scientists, and environmentalists to discuss crucial aspects of wetland conservation and sustainable environmental practices.
Distinguished speakers at the conference included Professor Eldar Rustamov, a member of the Coordination Committee of the Ramsar Regional Initiative of Central Asia, Pearly Kepbanov, Director of the Institute of Deserts, Flora, and Fauna, Jumamurad Saparmuradov, a member of the Coordination Committee of the Ramsar Regional Initiative of Central Asia, Berdinazar Khodzhanazarov, an independent auditor of the National Technopark ANT, and Myrat Akyev, the editor-in-chief of Ecology magazine, among others. The conference was moderated by a representative of the Turkmen Agricultural University, S. Niyazova – S. Annamukhamedov.
The speakers addressed various significant topics, including the pivotal role of the Ramsar Convention in global wetland preservation, Turkmenistan’s obligations as a Ramsar Convention signatory, regional partnerships fostering environmental activities, particularly in safeguarding Ramsar territories, and other pertinent subjects.
Eldar Rustamov, who led the recently conducted Ramsar 2024 expedition, delivered an extensive presentation highlighting the expedition’s findings and shedding light on Turkmenistan’s efforts in wetland research and preservation.
World Wetlands Day, observed annually on February 2nd, is an international initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of wetlands for the planet’s biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and the well-being of communities worldwide. The conference in Ashgabat provided a platform for meaningful discussions, sharing insights, and fostering collaboration among experts to further advance wetland conservation efforts in Turkmenistan.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection expressed gratitude to all participants, emphasizing the collective responsibility in preserving and sustaining the invaluable ecosystems represented by wetlands.
